Madelyn Lee Payne Dunham (DUN-əm; October 26, 1922 – November 2, 2008) was the grandmother of Barack Obama. He became the 44th President of the United States. Her daughter, Ann Dunham, was Obama's mother. Madelyn and her husband, Stanley Armour Dunham, helped raise Obama. He lived with them in their apartment in Honolulu, Hawaii from age ten. She passed away just two days before her grandson was elected President.

Early Life and Education

Madelyn Lee Payne was born in Peru, Kansas. She was the oldest of four children. Her younger brother was Charles T. Payne. Her parents were Rolla Charles "R.C." Payne and Leona Belle McCurry. Barack Obama wrote in his book, Dreams From My Father, that his grandparents were strict parents. They taught their children strong values.

When Madelyn was three years old, her family moved to Augusta, Kansas. She was a very good student at Augusta High School. Madelyn graduated from high school in 1940.

Later Life and Career

Madelyn Dunham had a successful career in banking. She worked her way up to become a Vice President at the Bank of Hawaii. This was a big achievement for a woman at that time. She was known for her hard work and dedication.

Passing Away

Madelyn passed away in Hawaii on November 2, 2008. This was only two days before the presidential election. Obama's team shared that she died peacefully after battling cancer.

At a rally, Obama spoke about his grandmother. He said, "She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America." He added that these heroes work hard every day. They do not seek fame, but they always try to do the right thing. Madelyn Dunham had voted early, and her vote was counted in Hawaii.

A private service was held for her on December 23, 2008. Obama and his sister, Maya, scattered their grandmother's ashes in the ocean. They chose Lanai Lookout, the same spot where they had scattered their mother's ashes in 1995.
