MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery is a chain of ice cream shops. They are known for serving delicious ice cream and other sweet treats. The first MaggieMoo's store opened in 1989 in Kansas City, Kansas. At one point, there were about 400 MaggieMoo's stores! Today, the company is part of a bigger group called FAT Brands.
The Story of MaggieMoo's
MaggieMoo's was started by Juel and Katherine Tillery in Kansas City, Kansas. When they were looking for a name for their new ice cream shop, they thought of a cow they saw every day on a farm. Their young daughter had lovingly named this cow "MaggieMoo." So, they decided to name their store after her!
Their first store was very successful. Soon, they started a "franchise" program. This means other people could open their own MaggieMoo's stores, using the same name and recipes. By 1996, there were about 90 MaggieMoo's shops, mostly in Kansas City and nearby areas.
The company needed more money and experienced people to help it grow even bigger. So, the Tillerys sold the company to Richard Sharoff. He was very experienced in the food and franchise business. Richard Sharoff helped the company get the money it needed and moved the main office to Columbia, Maryland. He also made the brand stronger and improved how the stores worked.
A marketing company worked with a cartoonist named Charlie Podrebarac to create the fun MaggieMoo character and logo. This friendly cow became the chain's "spokescow." Under Sharoff's leadership, MaggieMoo's grew very quickly. In 2003, they celebrated opening their 100th store in Phoenix, Arizona!
Later, in 2003, Richard Sharoff sold his part of the company. Over the years, MaggieMoo's changed owners a few times. In 2021, a large company called FAT Brands bought the group that owned MaggieMoo's. After this, many MaggieMoo's locations became Marble Slab Creamery stores instead.
Helping Others
MaggieMoo's also does a lot of good work for charity. They do this through their friendly mascot, Miss Maggie Moo.
The company says that Miss Maggie Moo helps with many different activities. These include:
- Helping to rescue animals with the Humane Society.
- Raising money for people affected by Hurricane Katrina.
- Walking to support finding a cure for breast cancer.
- Helping schools raise money for their programs.
- Assisting Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts earn their badges.
