The Story of Marble Slab
Marble Slab started as a single ice cream shop in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 1983 by two chefs, Sigmund Penn and Tom LePage. Back then, it was called Cones & Cream.
The chefs were inspired by another ice cream maker who mixed toppings right into the ice cream. In 1986, Marble Slab became the first ice cream shop to use a special frozen granite slab. This cold stone surface helps them mix yummy toppings into your ice cream perfectly.
Later in 1986, a person named Ronnie Hankamer bought Marble Slab. He helped the company grow by creating the idea of franchising. This meant other people could open their own Marble Slab stores.
Growing Across the World
In the late 2000s, Marble Slab started to open many more stores outside of its original area. It became known as a very fast-growing franchise. In 2007, Entrepreneur Magazine recognized Marble Slab as one of the top franchises. It was listed among the best in categories like "Franchise 500" and "Fastest-Growing Franchises."
The company's main office used to be in Houston, Texas. After some changes, its headquarters moved to Georgia.
Who Owns Marble Slab?
Over the years, Marble Slab Creamery has had a few different owners. In February 2007, a company called Global Franchise Group bought Marble Slab. This made Marble Slab part of a group that also owned other dessert brands like MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery and Great American Cookies.
More recently, on June 28, 2021, Global Franchise Group announced that it would be bought by FAT Brands. FAT Brands also owns other well-known restaurant chains like Fatburger and Johnny Rockets. The deal was completed on July 22, 2021.
