History of Magnetic Springs

Magnetic Springs was first planned out in 1879. This happened after special underground springs were found there. The village got its name because people believed the mineral water from these springs had healing powers.

A Popular Tourist Spot

News about these special springs spread far and wide. Soon, tourists from all over the country came to visit. Sometimes, even people from other countries would visit. Many hotels and resorts were built, and the village became very busy and popular.

Changes Over Time

However, as new medicines and cures were discovered, like the vaccine for polio, people became less interested in natural healing methods. Because of this, the tourism business in Magnetic Springs slowly stopped. By the early 1980s, all the old hotel resorts had been taken down.

Mayor Mary McFadden's Leadership

During the 1920s, a time known as the Prohibition era, there were some secret, illegal businesses in the village. But the mayor at the time, Mary McFadden, strongly opposed these activities. She also worked hard to raise money for public services. She helped get funds for a bigger town hall. To encourage all council members to attend meetings, she would even cook dinner for them!
