Renetta Yemika Lowe-Bridgewater (born September 30, 1982 – died December 20, 2010) was an American rapper. She was best known by her stage name, Magnolia Shorty. She was a big part of the New Orleans bounce music scene.
Magnolia Shorty's Music Journey
Magnolia Shorty and Ms. Tee were the first female artists to sign with Cash Money Records. This was a very important record label. Her first album, Monkey on the Dick, came out in 1997. Many people still see this album as a classic in bounce music. She was already thought of as a "legend of bounce music" when she passed away.
The magazine Offbeat said her album showed the funny and strong dance rhythms of New Orleans. A writer named Nik Cohn learned about bounce music because of Magnolia Shorty. She was also sampled in songs by other artists. These included "Homegurl" by Bone, "In My Feelings" by Drake, and "Wobble Up" by Chris Brown.
How She Started and Collaborated
Birdman, a famous rapper, discovered Magnolia Shorty. She got her nickname from Soulja Slim, who was also known as Magnolia Slim. This was because both of them grew up in the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans. People called her the "Queen of Bounce."
She worked with many Cash Money artists starting in the 1990s. These artists included Juvenile and the Hot Boys. She was first featured on Juvenile's song "3rd Ward Solja" in 1997. In 2009, she performed at the SXSW music festival. She also won Best Bounce Song at the Underground Hip-Hop Awards in New Orleans. She was part of Lil Wayne's Cash Money group in the early 1990s. She was working on her second album in 2010 when she passed away.
A Tragic Loss
On December 20, 2010, Magnolia Shorty was planning to go to Miami, Florida. She was going to perform at a bounce music festival there. Sadly, she was killed in a car with Jerome Hampton. This happened in the parking lot of her apartment complex in New Orleans. Her funeral was held on December 30, 2010. Many famous musicians attended, including Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine, and Birdman. She was laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery in New Orleans.
