The Magusa orbifera is a type of moth. It belongs to a large group of moths called the Noctuidae family. These moths are often called "owlet moths" or "cutworm moths."

You can find Magusa orbifera moths in warm places. They live in southern Florida, all the way through the Florida Keys, and into the Caribbean islands. People sometimes call this moth the Orbed Narrow-wing. However, another similar moth, Magusa divaricata, can also share this name.

About the Magusa Orbifera Moth

This moth is not very big. Its wingspan is about 34 millimeters (which is a little over an inch). This is the distance from one wingtip to the other when the wings are spread out.

These moths are special because you can see them flying all year long. They don't just appear in one season.

What Magusa Orbifera Eats

The young moths, called larvae (or caterpillars), need food to grow. They like to eat the leaves of certain plants. Their favorite plants are Krugiodendron ferreum and Karwinskia humboldtiana. These plants are found in the same warm regions where the moths live.

How Scientists Classify Moths

Scientists give every living thing a special name. This helps them organize and understand nature. They group similar animals together.

For a while, scientists thought that Magusa divaricata was the same kind of moth as Magusa orbifera. They called it a "synonym," meaning it was just another name for the same species. But recently, after more study, they decided that Magusa divaricata is actually a different, valid species. This shows how science is always learning new things!
