Mahanoy City is a small town, called a borough, in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. It is located about 38 miles (61 km) southwest of Wilkes-Barre. The borough is part of Pennsylvania's Coal Region, an area known for its coal mines.
The name "Mahanoy" comes from an old word, Maghonioy. This word means "the salt deposits" in the Delaware language.

History of Mahanoy City
Mahanoy City started as part of Mahanoy Township. People began to settle here in 1859. It officially became a borough on December 16, 1863.
Coal Mining and Other Industries
For a long time, the main industry in Mahanoy City was mining and shipping coal. This was very important in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over time, the need for coal has gone down.
Other important jobs in the borough include making shirts, bedding, and metal products.
St. Nicholas Coal Breaker
The St. Nicholas Coal Breaker was a large building used to process coal. It was built in 1930 and started working in 1932. Even though it was planned to be taken down, it was still standing in 2016.
First Cable TV in the U.S.
Mahanoy City made history in 1948. It was the first town in the entire country to have Cable TV!
Geography and Location
Mahanoy City is located at 40°48′45″N 76°8′25″W / 40.81250°N 76.14028°W. A main road, PA 54, runs through the borough. This road is called Centre Street.
Connecting Roads and Nearby Towns
Route 54 connects Mahanoy City to other towns. To the west, it goes to Shenandoah. To the east, it passes through small villages and then through Tamaqua.
The borough is in a valley near Mahanoy Creek. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Shenandoah. Mahanoy City is about 1240 feet (378 meters) above sea level. A ridge called Broad Mountain, which is 1795 feet (547 meters) high, is to the southeast.
