Maheno is a small town in North Otago, New Zealand. It is located south of Oamaru. About 75 people live in the town. Many streets in Maheno are named after places in Tyne and Wear, England. These include Whickham, Felling, Heworth, and Jarrow. A famous ship from World War I, the SS Maheno, was named after this town. It was one of New Zealand's hospital ships during the war.

The Maheno Rugby Football Club is a local sports team. They play their home games at the Maheno Domain. This sports ground is located along Kakanui Valley Road in Maheno. The club was started in 1898.
Maheno School: Learning and History
Maheno School is a primary school for students from Year 1 to Year 8. This means it teaches children from ages 5 to 13. The school has about 79 students.
The school first opened on October 11, 1875. Many local parents were very happy about this. A man named Peter Williams gave the land for the school. The community also raised money to help build it. The government also gave money for the school. Robert Peattie was the first teacher. He was chosen from 14 people who wanted the job.
When the school first opened, 50 children enrolled. By the middle of 1876, there were 72 students. The school has been improved many times over the years.

- By 1907, a third classroom was needed because more students joined.
- In 1946, the main part of the new school building was constructed.
- The school swimming pool was built in 1957.
- In 1960, a block for younger children was built.
- A dental clinic opened at the school in 1963.

In 2013, the principal, Murray Nelson, retired. He had led the school for 21 years. Students from Maheno School have visited the wreck of the SS Maheno. This ship is located on Fraser Island in Australia. Students visited the wreck in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
