Mahoning Creek begins south of a town called Summit Hill. It starts in a low area, like a "saddle," between two hills.

From its start, Mahoning Creek flows next to Pisgah Mountain. It follows the southern side of this mountain. Later, it moves away from the Mahoning Hills. It then flows along the northern side of Mauch Chunk Ridge.

The creek passes through Mahoning Township. Finally, Mahoning Creek meets the Lehigh River. This meeting point is close to the town of Lehighton.
