Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi (born April 4, 1889 – died January 30, 1968) was a famous Indian writer. People also called him Pandit ji. He was a poet, a writer, and a journalist. He is well-known for helping India gain its freedom. He also played a big part in a Hindi literature style called Chhayavaad. This was like a new romantic movement in writing.

He received the first Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Him Tarangini in 1955. The Indian government also gave him the Padma Bhushan award in 1963. This is a very high honor for citizens. Because his writings made people feel proud of India, he was known as the Yug Charan.

Life and Work

Early Life and Education

Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born on April 4, 1889. His birthplace was a village called Babai (now Makhan Nagar). This village is in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, India. He started working as a schoolteacher when he was just 16 years old.

A Voice for Freedom

Later, he became an editor for important newspapers. These papers were called Prabha, Pratap, and Karmaveer. They were known for supporting India's freedom from British rule. Because of his strong writings, he was put in jail many times by the British government.

Even after India became independent, he did not seek a government job. Instead, he kept writing and speaking out. He wanted to fix social problems. He believed in a fair society, just like Mahatma Gandhi imagined.

Famous Writings

Makhanlal Chaturvedi wrote many well-known books. Some of his famous works include Him Kirtini and Him Tarangini. He also wrote Yug Charan and Sahitya Devata.

He wrote many popular poems too. Some of these are Venu Lo Gunje Dhara and Deep Se Deep Jale. Other famous poems include Kaisa Chhand Banaa Deti hai, Agnipath, and Pushp ki Abhilaashaa.

Awards and Celebrations

To remember Makhanlal Chaturvedi, the Madhya Pradesh Sahitya Akademi holds an event every year. It is called the Makhanlal Chaturvedi Samaroh. This event has been happening since 1987. They also give out an award each year. It is called the Makhanlal Chaturvedi Puraskar. This award honors excellent poetry by Indian poets.

University Named After Him

A university in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, is named after him. It is called the Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya. This university focuses on journalism.
