"Making Today a Perfect Day" is a fun song from the 2015 Walt Disney Animation Studios short film Frozen Fever. It was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. You hear it sung throughout most of the short film. The song was released as a single in the United States on March 12, 2015.

Making the Song and Short Film

How the Idea Started

In September 2014, John Lasseter, who was a top creative boss at Walt Disney Animation Studios, announced exciting news. He said a new Frozen short film would be made. It would even have a brand new song!

Soon after, a magazine called Variety shared more details. The short film would be called Frozen Fever. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee would direct it again. Peter Del Vecho would produce it. And the amazing songwriting team, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, would write the new song.

Recording the Voices

By mid-October, Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa, said the actors had already recorded their parts. She mentioned, "We just worked on a short for Frozen." Everyone was excited to bring the characters back to life.

In December 2014, it was announced that Frozen Fever would show in movie theaters. It would play before Walt Disney Pictures' new Cinderella movie, starting March 13, 2015. The directors felt a special magic with the characters and music. They hoped audiences would love the short film.

Developing the Story

The idea for a Frozen short film came up in April 2014. Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee weren't sure at first. They were still trying to understand why Frozen was so popular. But they agreed to start thinking of ideas.

After some talks about Olaf, a story artist named Marc Smith had a great idea. What if Elsa got a cold? This fun idea became the main plot for the short film. The directors started working on the short in June. By August, the cast was back in the studio to record their voices for the new story.

The New Song's Impact

The short film features the song "Making Today a Perfect Day." At the premiere of Cinderella and Frozen Fever in March 2015, Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, joked about the new song. He told USA Today, "I want to apologize to parents everywhere for the fact that children are going to be singing a whole new Frozen song..." His wife even noticed him humming it days after he recorded his lines!

What the Song is Like

Hidden References

In "Making Today a Perfect Day," there's a fun nod to the famous song "Let It Go." Elsa sings that "a cold never bothered me anyway." This time, she's talking about an actual cold! Billboard magazine suggested that the songwriters added this "Easter egg" because they knew what fans would love.

A Familiar Tune

The beginning of the song also uses a tune from an older song called Life's Too Short. This song was originally planned for the first Frozen movie but was later removed. Los Angeles Times noted that dedicated Frozen fans quickly spotted the similarity.

Robert Lopez, one of the songwriters, explained on Twitter. He said they wrote the new lyrics for the intro. Then they realized the words fit the old tune perfectly. He called Life's Too Short their "favorite cut song" and one they really loved.

When and How it Was Released

The Frozen Fever short film officially came out with the 2015 Cinderella movie. But the audio of the song was released online a day earlier, on March 12. The official Disney blog posted the lyrics on March 13. A lyric video for the song was then released online on March 20.

The song was also heavily promoted. You could see it advertised on the front cover of the Cinderella soundtrack CD. The song was even sung by the cast of the Disney Channel show Best Friends Whenever.
