Location in South Australia

Makiri is a special place in the northwest of South Australia. It has a natural rock hole and an outstation, which is like a small community for Aboriginal people. Makiri is found in the huge Great Victoria Desert, between the towns of Kaltjiti and Watarru.

This area is very important to the local Aboriginal people. It is a sacred site linked to the tjala or honey ant Dreaming. This is a special story and set of laws, mainly for women. Sadly, in 1969, a group of surveyors disturbed a large part of this sacred site. Because of its importance, the South Australian government made Makiri a "Prohibited Area" in 1973. This means it is a protected place due to its important Aboriginal stories and culture.

Makiri is surrounded by shrubland and sand dunes. The outstation there was set up in the early 1980s. Since 1984, it has been looked after by the Irintata Homelands group from Kaltjiti. The outstation has one house that uses solar power for electricity. Water comes from a rainwater tank and a bore (a deep well). Scientists often use Makiri as a base for their research. This is because the area is home to several endangered species of plants and animals.

About Makiri Outstation

The outstation at Makiri is a small community. It helps Aboriginal people live on their traditional lands. It provides a place for families to stay. The outstation is supported by the Irintata Homelands group. This group helps manage the community and its resources.

The house at Makiri uses clean solar power. This is a great way to get electricity in a remote area. Water is also collected from rain or pumped from underground. This makes the outstation self-sufficient.

Why Makiri is Important

Makiri is important for several reasons. First, it is a very special sacred site. It holds deep cultural meaning for the local Aboriginal people. The honey ant Dreaming stories are passed down through generations.

Second, Makiri is important for science. Scientists visit to study the unique environment. They learn about the plants and animals that live there. Many of these species are endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing forever. Research at Makiri helps protect them.
