Mala Rodríguez: Her Early Life and Beginnings
María Rodríguez was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Spain, on February 13, 1979. She grew up in Seville, where she became interested in the city's lively hip-hop scene as a teenager. Her mother was a hairdresser, and María describes her family as working-class. She has said that her family experienced tough times, which stayed with her.
When she was seventeen, María performed on stage for the very first time. This was a big moment for her. Around this time, she chose her stage name, La Mala, which means "The Bad One" in Spanish.
Mala Rodríguez's Music Journey
Mala Rodríguez became well-known in the late 1990s. She was part of a growing hip-hop scene in Seville, alongside groups like La Gota Que Colma and SFDK.
First Steps in Music
After she started using the name La Mala, she appeared on other artists' albums. She sang on songs like "No Hay Rebaja" and "Dando Guerra" for La Gota Que Colma's album Mordiendo el Micro. She also worked with SFDK on their album Siempre Fuertes.
In 1999, Mala Rodríguez released her first solo music, a maxi-single called A Jierro/Toma la Traca. This was a big step for her. In 2000, she signed with Universal Music Spain. Soon after, she released her first full album, Lujo Ibérico.
Big Hits and Awards
Her second album, Alevosía, came out in 2003 and featured the popular song "La Niña". One of her songs, "Volveré," from the album Malamarismo, was even featured in the movie Fast & Furious.
In 2008, she was invited to sing with Julieta Venegas for her MTV Unplugged show. They performed the song "Eres para mí" together.

Mala Rodríguez has performed at many big events, including the Festival Imperial in Costa Rica in 2012. In 2013, she announced her album Bruja, which was released in June of that year.
In 2015, Mala Rodríguez's music gained even more attention when President Barack Obama included one of her songs on his Summer Spotify playlist. Also, NPR named her earlier single "Yo Marco El Minuto" as one of the 200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women.
After a break, Mala released the single "Gitanas" in 2018. Pitchfork praised her powerful vocals in the song. In 2019, she made history by becoming the first urban artist to win Spain's National Music Award. She also became a judge on Spain's version of The Voice, called La Voz. Her album Mala was released in May 2020, and her memoir Cómo ser Mala came out in June 2021.
