It is called a census-designated place, which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes. Malaga is located about 6 miles (10 km) south of downtown Fresno. It sits at an elevation of 295 feet (90 meters) above sea level. In 2020, 884 people lived in Malaga.

History of Malaga

The area where Malaga is located has an interesting past. It first had a post office in 1886. This post office was originally named Tokay. However, later that same year, its name was changed to Malaga.

The post office in Malaga closed down in 1964 but then reopened just one year later in 1965. The town got its name from the Málaga grape, a type of grape often used to make wine.

Malaga first appeared in the U.S. Census in 2000. At that time, it was mistakenly called "Calwa." For the 2010 census, the name was corrected to Malaga. A new, separate community called Calwa was then created in Fresno County.
