The malbrouck (Chlorocebus cynosuros) is a type of monkey found in Africa. It's an "Old World monkey," which means it lives in Africa or Asia. Malbroucks are part of a group of monkeys called Chlorocebus. Sometimes, scientists think they might be a kind of vervet monkey or grivet.
What Malbroucks Look Like
Malbroucks are slender and quick monkeys. They have long arms, legs, and a long tail. Their fur is mostly olive-grey. Their chest and belly are white. Their cheeks and eyebrows are also white. These white parts frame their face, which is bald and has light patches. Malbroucks have brown eyes. Male malbroucks are usually about 20% bigger than females.
Where Malbroucks Live
You can find malbroucks in central and south-central Africa. Their home stretches from the Albertine Rift in the DR Congo all the way west to the Atlantic Ocean. They also live south into northern Namibia and Zambia. Malbroucks like to live in wet forests, forests mixed with grasslands (savanna-forest), and mountain forests. They can live in places as high as 4,500 meters (about 14,750 feet) above sea level.
Malbrouck Behaviour
Malbroucks are active during the day. They live in large groups that can have anywhere from six to more than 50 monkeys. The number of males and females in a group is usually about the same. Each group has its own special area, called a territory. How big this territory is depends on how much food is available there. Malbroucks use many different sounds and body movements to talk to each other within their group.
What Malbroucks Eat
Malbroucks are omnivorous, which means they eat both plants and animals. Their diet includes fruits, seeds, flowers, and tree sap. They also eat small animals like invertebrates (like insects), eggs, baby birds (chicks), and lizards. Most of the time, they eat more plant-based foods than animal-based foods.
