A few years later, in 1885, Malcolm Showers bought two pieces of land. He built Malcolm's first church on one of them. He also served as the Methodist minister there for a while.
The village even had its own weekly newspaper called the Malcolm Messenger. It started in 1891 and was known for its fun gossip column. The newspaper was published until 1934.
