Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Malcolm Norris (1900–1967) was an important Canadian Métis leader and activist in the 20th century. He worked hard to improve life for Métis and First Nations people across Canada.

Malcolm Norris was born in 1900 in Edmonton. His father, John Norris, was a businessman, and his mother, Euphrosine Plante, was Métis. Malcolm was one of the younger children in a large family. Life was sometimes challenging for him and his siblings due to racial prejudice in the early 1900s.

Early Work and Activism

Malcolm Norris worked for a time with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). He also worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. His jobs took him to many places in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. During his travels, he saw how difficult life was for many Métis and First Nations communities. They often faced disorganization and poverty.

These experiences made him want to help. He believed in fairness and self-sufficiency for his people. In 1932, he helped start the Métis Association of Alberta. This group is now known as the Métis Nation of Alberta. He worked alongside his friend James P. Brady and others to create this important organization.

Serving in World War II and Working in Saskatchewan

During the Second World War, Malcolm Norris served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, he moved to northern Saskatchewan. For many years, he worked with the new Co-operative Commonwealth Federation government in Saskatchewan.

While in Saskatchewan, Norris continued his work for the Métis people. He wanted them to have more control over their own communities and finances. He helped organize the Métis Association of Saskatchewan to achieve these goals.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1964, the Saskatchewan Liberal Party came back into power. Malcolm Norris was then let go from his government job in Prince Albert. Even after this, he did not stop fighting for his people. He became the President of the Métis Association of Saskatchewan. He also advised First Nations Chiefs and bands on how to organize politically.

In 1967, Malcolm Norris moved back to Alberta. He passed away that same year from a stroke. He is remembered as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for the rights and well-being of Métis and First Nations people.
