Maleza Alta is a small, countryside area, also known as a "barrio," located in the town of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,800 people lived there. A barrio is like a neighborhood or district within a larger municipality.

History of Maleza Alta

Becoming Part of the United States

After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.

Early Population Count

In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is an official count of how many people live in an area. The census found that 784 people lived in Maleza Alta barrio at that time.

Ramey Air Force Base

Maleza Alta is also home to the former Ramey Air Force Base. This was once an important base for the United States Air Force.
