Malik Bendjelloul (born September 14, 1977 – died May 13, 2014) was a talented Swedish filmmaker and journalist. He also acted as a child. He is best known for directing the 2012 documentary film Searching for Sugar Man. This film won an Oscar and a BAFTA Award.

Malik Bendjelloul's Early Life

Malik Bendjelloul was born in Ystad, Sweden. This town is about 55 kilometers (34 miles) east of Malmö. His father, Hacène Bendjelloul, was a doctor from Algeria. His mother, Veronica Schildt Bendjelloul, was a Swedish translator and painter.

Malik grew up in different parts of Sweden, including Ängelholm. He had a brother named Johar Bendjelloul, who became a journalist. His uncles, Peter and Johan Schildt, were actors.

Acting as a Young Person

In the 1990s, Malik acted in a TV series called Ebba och Didrik. He played the character Philip Clavelle. His uncle, Peter Schildt, directed these episodes.

Malik went to Rönne Gymnasium in Ängelholm, where he studied social science. He finished school in 1996. After that, he studied journalism and media production at Kalmar University.

Malik Bendjelloul's Career in Film and TV

Malik Bendjelloul started his career in television as a reporter. He worked for Swedish public television (SVT). He was a freelancer, which means he worked for himself and was hired for specific projects. He also worked as a journalist for a show called Kobra.

He hosted a morning TV show called Gomorron Sverige. He also hosted a morning radio show, P1-morgon, for Sveriges Radio. Before working for SVT, he was part of an independent company called Barracuda Film & TV.

Directing Documentaries

Later, Malik left his reporting job to direct documentaries. These films were about famous musicians like Elton John, Rod Stewart, Björk, and Kraftwerk.

His most famous documentary was Searching for Sugar Man. This film won many important awards. It won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It also won a BAFTA Award in 2013.

The film also received awards from the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America. It won awards at the Sundance festival and from the International Documentary Association.

Searching for Sugar Man was also very successful at the box office. It earned about $3.6 million. The movie tells the story of how musician Sixto Rodriguez's music became popular again.

In 2013, Malik Bendjelloul was invited to host a show on the Swedish radio program Sommar i P1. He shared with listeners how he made Searching for Sugar Man.

Malik Bendjelloul's Film Projects

At the time of his passing, Malik Bendjelloul was working on a new film. This project was based on a book called The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony.
