History of Ängelholm
The town of Ängelholm was started in 1516. It was first called Engelholm. King Christian II of Denmark founded it. He moved the settlement from a place called Luntertun. Luntertun was on the coast and hard to defend.
King Christian II personally chose the new town's borders. He also gave the town a special document called a charter in 1516. This charter gave the town certain rights and freedoms. Today, only a church garden is left at Luntertun.
For many centuries, Ängelholm stayed a small town. In 1658, after the Treaty of Roskilde, Ängelholm became part of Sweden. Before this, it belonged to Denmark. The town started to grow a lot in the 1800s. This was because of new factories and industries.
Ängelholm was also a garrison town until 1883. This means it had a military base there. Later, it had a Swedish Air Force base from 1941 to 2009. The older spelling, Engelholm, was used until 1912. Then, the town council decided to change it to Ängelholm. This new spelling matched a Swedish spelling reform from 1906.
Today, a company called Koenigsegg Automotive is located in Ängelholm. They make very fast, high-performance cars. Their factory is on the land of the old air force base, which is now closed.
