High School Basketball Career
Malik Newman played all four years of his high school basketball career at Callaway High School in Jackson, Mississippi. When he was a junior, he scored 25 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and made 2 blocks to help his team beat Vicksburg High School. This win earned them the 2014 Mississippi Class 5A Championship.
In August 2014, Malik was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship. This is a huge award for a young player on the world stage!
As a senior, Malik was amazing, averaging nearly 30 points per game (29.7 points), along with 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He led his team, the Chargers, to an impressive 31 wins and only 3 losses. Because of his great skills, Malik was chosen to play in several important games for top high school players. These included the 2015 McDonald's All-American Boys Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, and the Nike Hoop Summit.
Experts at Rivals.com rated him as a five-star recruit, meaning he was one of the best young players in the country. They ranked him as the eighth best overall player in his class. ESPN also ranked him highly, placing him 10th overall for the Class of 2015. After high school, Malik decided to play college basketball at Mississippi State University.
College Basketball Journey
Playing for Mississippi State
On April 24, 2015, Malik signed to play college basketball at Mississippi State University. This was a special choice because his father, Horatio Webster, had also played basketball there from 1997 to 1998. During his first year, called his freshman season, Malik averaged 11.3 points per game.
Transferring to Kansas
On July 1, 2016, Malik decided to transfer and committed to play at the University of Kansas. According to rules from the NCAA, he had to sit out one season. This means he couldn't play in games during the Jayhawks' 2016–2017 season. This is called "redshirting."
In his only season playing for the Kansas Jayhawks, Malik was a key player. He averaged 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He was also named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, which is a great honor for a player new to the conference.
On March 25, 2018, Malik had an incredible game. He scored 13 of the Jayhawks' points in overtime and finished with a career-high 32 points! This amazing performance helped lead the Jayhawks to the NCAA Final Four by beating Duke University.
