Malik Tidderious Newman (born February 21, 1997) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for Merkezefendi Belediyesi Denizli in Turkey. Malik played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
He went to Callaway High School in Jackson, Mississippi. There, he helped his team win four state championships in a row. His jersey number 14 was even retired by the school when he was a senior.

High School Basketball Journey
Malik Newman played basketball all four years at Callaway High School. This school is located in Jackson, Mississippi.
Winning Championships
When he was a junior, Malik scored 25 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots. This helped his team beat Vicksburg High School. They won the 2014 Mississippi Class 5A Championship.
In August 2014, Malik was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship. This was a big international basketball tournament.
Senior Year Highlights
As a senior, Malik was amazing on the court. He averaged almost 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. He led his team to a fantastic 31-3 record.
Malik was chosen to play in several important games for top high school players. These included the 2015 McDonald's All-American Boys Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, and the Nike Hoop Summit. Experts like Rivals.com and ESPN ranked him among the top players in his class. Malik decided to play college basketball at Mississippi State University.
College Basketball Career
Malik Newman played for two different colleges during his basketball career.
Playing for Mississippi State
On April 24, 2015, Malik officially signed to play for Mississippi State University. His father, Horatio Webster, had also played basketball there years before. In his first year, Malik averaged 11.3 points per game.
Time with Kansas Jayhawks
On July 1, 2016, Malik decided to transfer to the University of Kansas. Due to NCAA rules, he had to sit out the 2016-2017 season. This is called "redshirting."
In his only season playing for the Kansas Jayhawks, Malik was a key player. He averaged 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. On March 25, 2018, Malik had an incredible game. He scored 13 points in overtime and a career-high 32 points overall. This helped the Jayhawks win against Duke University and reach the NCAA Final Four.
Professional Basketball Journey
After college, Malik Newman began his professional basketball career.
Starting with Sioux Falls Skyforce (2018–2019)
Malik was not chosen in the 2018 NBA draft. However, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 1, 2018. After playing in the Summer League, the Lakers released him.
He then signed with the Miami Heat but was later waived. On October 10, 2018, Malik joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA G League. He played 17 games, averaging 9.5 points and 2.6 rebounds.
Playing for Canton Charge (2019–2020)
On January 5, 2019, Malik was traded to the Canton Charge. On November 21, he had a great game with 26 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. In January 2020, he scored over 20 points in five games in a row. He finished the season as the team's second-highest scorer, averaging 16.1 points per game.
Brief Time with Cleveland Cavaliers (2020)
On February 9, 2020, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed Malik to a 10-day contract. He made his NBA debut that same night against the Los Angeles Clippers. He scored two points from free throws in four minutes of play. This was his only regular-season NBA game.
Playing Overseas (2020–2022)
Malik then moved to play internationally.
- On June 29, 2020, he signed with Frutti Extra Bursaspor in the Turkish Super League.
- On January 16, 2021, he joined Ironi Nahariya in the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He was third in the league for free throw percentage (91.8%).
- On October 23, 2021, Malik returned to the Cleveland Charge. He averaged 17.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
- On December 29, 2021, he signed another 10-day contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- On January 8, 2022, he went back to the Cleveland Charge. He was later waived in March due to an injury.
Recent Teams (2022–Present)
Malik has continued his professional career with several teams:
- On November 5, 2022, he signed with Avtodor Saratov in the VTB United League.
- On December 9, 2024, he joined Napoli Basket in Italy.
