A Look at Mallaig's History
Mallaig was one of many communities that grew because of the railroad. Railroads were being built across Western Canada in the early 1900s. The hamlet was officially started in 1928.
The name "Mallaig" came from a Scottish worker. The area had many swamps and low-lying lands. These reminded him of his hometown, Mallaig, Scotland.
Mallaig Today
Over time, the railway tracks were removed. Now, the old railway path is the Iron Horse Trail. This is a long trail used for fun activities like riding all-terrain vehicles.
Today, Mallaig is a small community. It has a few basic services. There is also a school that teaches students from kindergarten to grade 12. About 246 students from Mallaig and nearby areas attend this school.

In 2021, a count of the population showed that 210 people lived in Mallaig. These people lived in 80 homes. This number was a small increase from 2016, when 207 people lived there.
