The Maloja District (also known as Romansh: Bezirk Malögia in Romansh and Italian: Distretto di Maloja in Italian) was a special area in Switzerland. It was like a county or region within the larger area called Graubünden, which is one of Switzerland's cantons (similar to a state).

This district was quite large, covering about 973 square kilometers (about 375 square miles). In 2015, around 18,698 people lived there. The Maloja District was replaced by the Maloja Region on January 1, 2017, as part of a big change in how the canton was organized.

One cool thing about the Maloja District was that it was trilingual! This means three official languages were spoken by the people living there. These languages were German, Italian, and Romansh.

Parts of the Maloja District

The Maloja District was made up of two smaller sections, which were called Kreis in German or circoli in Italian. Think of these as sub-districts. These two sub-districts were:

Together, these two sub-districts included sixteen different municipalities. A municipality is like a town or a small local government area.

Languages Spoken

In the Maloja District, you could hear all three of Graubünden's official languages: German, Romansh, and Italian. For a long time, Romansh was widely spoken, especially outside the Bregaglia area. However, over the years, the number of people speaking Romansh has become smaller compared to German and Italian.

Let's look at how the languages changed over time:

Languages of Maloja District, GR
Languages 1970 1980 1990 2000
Number Percent Number Percent Number Percent Number Percent
German 6,567 41.3% 7,269 44.7% 8,643 52.6% 10,474 55.7%
Romansh 3,340 21.0% 3,489 21.5% 2,722 16.6% 2,312 12.3%
Italian 4,950 31.1% 4,271 26.3% 3,705 22.6% 4,004 21.3%
TOTAL 15,910 100% 16,252 100% 16,420 100% 18,813 100%

As you can see from the table, German became the most spoken language over time. Romansh saw a decrease in the percentage of speakers, while Italian's percentage also changed but remained a significant language in the district.
