The Historic Malvern Hill House
Malvern Hill was originally the name of a house built in the 1600s. Thomas Cocke built this house, and his family owned it for many years. The name "Malvern Hill" comes from the Malvern Hills in England.
What Remains of the House
Sadly, a fire badly damaged the historic house in 1905. Today, only parts of the outer walls and a fireplace remain. Even as ruins, these parts are important. They show a rare "cruciform" (cross-shaped) design for houses in Virginia. One chimney still stands, showing beautiful brickwork from the 1600s.
Malvern Hill's Role in Wars
Malvern Hill has been important in three different wars throughout American history.
American Revolutionary War
During the American Revolutionary War in 1781, Lafayette, a French general who helped America, camped here twice with his soldiers.
War of 1812
Later, during the War of 1812, Virginia's local soldiers also used Malvern Hill as a camp.
American Civil War Battle
However, Malvern Hill is most famous for the bloody Battle of Malvern Hill in 1862. This battle was a key event in the American Civil War.
Protecting Malvern Hill Today
In recent years, efforts have been made to protect the historic land around Malvern Hill.
Land Sale and Conservation
In August 2016, the large 871-acre Malvern Hill Farm was put up for sale. It was bought in February 2018 by a non-profit group called the Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC). They paid $6.6 million for the land.
Future Plans for the Land
The CRLC has worked to protect this important area. They have set aside 465 acres to be preserved for history and 25 acres for outdoor activities.
- Some parts of the land were given to Henrico County. This area will become an open space for learning and quiet outdoor fun.
- Other parts were given to the James River Association. This will allow for a place to launch canoes and kayaks into Turkey Island Creek, which flows into the James River.
- The remaining 380 acres are being held by the CRLC. They plan for this land to become part of the National Park Service's Richmond National Battlefield Park. This will help protect the historic battlefield for future generations.
