Malå is a small town in Sweden, located in the northern part of the country. It's found in Västerbotten County and is the main town, or "seat," of Malå Municipality. In 2010, about 2,050 people lived here.
Malå is also special because it's part of the Swedish province of Lapland. This is a beautiful area known for its vast nature and unique culture. The town's name has roots in the local Sámi languages, where it's known as Ume Sami: Máláge or Southern Sami: Maalege.
A Look at Malå's Past
The name Malå comes from the Sámi word Máláge. The exact meaning of this word isn't fully clear. Some people think it might come from "málle," which means blood or sap.
Another idea is that Máláge is linked to the Swedish name for the river nearby. This river was called "Måll-ån" in 1553. The Swedish word "mal" can mean sand, gravel, or small stones. This suggests the river's name might describe its rocky or sandy banks.
Malå has been an important local center for a long time. After a big change in local government in 1862, Malå became part of a rural municipality. Later, in 1941, a special community called Malåträsk was created for the village. This community lasted until 1952.
Since 1983, Malå has been the central town of Malå Municipality. For a short time, between 1974 and 1983, it was part of Norsjö Municipality.
