Mandé Sidibé (born January 20, 1940 – died August 25, 2009) was an important leader in Mali. He served as the Prime Minister of Mali from 2000 to 2002. He also played a big role in banking, leading the board of Ecobank and working with the Central Bank of West African States.

Mandé Sidibé's Early Life and Education

Mandé Sidibé was born in a place called Bafoulabé in Mali. He grew up in Bamako, which is the capital city. His father, Mamadou Sidibé, was a captain in the French Army.

Schooling in Mali and France

Mandé Sidibé went to Terrasson de Fougères High School in Bamako. In 1959, he moved to France to continue his studies. He earned his Baccalauréat (a high school diploma) in 1960. Later, in 1965, he graduated from the University of Paris with a degree in Economic Sciences. This means he studied how money, resources, and trade work.

Family Connections

Mandé Sidibé had a brother named Modibo Sidibé. Modibo also became a very important politician in Mali. He served as the Prime Minister of Mali from 2007 to 2011.

Mandé Sidibé's Career and Public Service

After finishing his studies, Mandé Sidibé returned to Mali. He started his career working at the Bank of the Republic of Mali.

Working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

In 1967, Mandé Sidibé got an exciting opportunity. He joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as an economist. The IMF is an international organization that helps countries with their money and economies. He held several different jobs there. For example, he worked as an advisor in Chad from 1975 to 1977. He also became a head of a division in the Africa Department. While working at the IMF, he went back to school. He earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from George Washington University in 1974.

Leadership at the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO)

In 1985, Mandé Sidibé left the IMF to join the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). This bank helps manage money for several countries in West Africa. He took on many roles there, including Secretary General for money policies. He was also a special advisor to the governor of the BCEAO. From 1992 to 1995, he was the Director of the BCEAO's branch in Mali. He kept his role as a special advisor at the same time.

Serving as Prime Minister of Mali

In 1996, Mandé Sidibé became a special advisor to the President of Mali, Alpha Oumar Konaré. Then, from 2000 to 2002, he served as the Prime Minister of Mali. The Prime Minister is the head of the government in many countries. In 2002, he ran for president in the 2002 Malian presidential election. He received 2.01% of the votes, placing ninth.

Leading Ecobank

Mandé Sidibé also worked with Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI). This is a large banking group that operates in many countries in West Africa and Central Africa. He was on their Board of Directors from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he became the Chairman of the Ecobank Board of Directors. This means he was in charge of the bank's main governing group.

Mandé Sidibé's Passing

Mandé Sidibé passed away on August 25, 2009, in Paris, France. He was 69 years old.
