Manly's History: A Railroad Town
Manly started in 1877. It was first called Manly Junction. This was because two important railroads met there. These were the Rock Island and the Chicago Great Western lines.
In 1912, the Rock Island railroad became very important to Manly. They built a roundhouse and shops there. Many people worked for the railroad. Today, you can see a special train car called a caboose. It sits near Highway 9. This caboose reminds everyone of Manly's railroad past. In 2006, a train engine was also placed there. This happened during Manly's yearly Railroad/Ag Days party.
