Manuel Charlton (born July 25, 1941 – died July 6, 2022) was a talented guitar player. He was one of the people who started the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth. He played lead guitar for them from 1968 to 1990.

Manny Charlton's Music Journey

Starting with Nazareth

Manny Charlton was born in La Línea, Spain. When he was two years old, his family moved to Dunfermline, Scotland. Before joining Nazareth, Manny played in other bands like the Mark 5 and the Red Hawks. Later, he joined a local band called The Shadettes.

In 1968, the band changed its name to Nazareth. They got the idea from a song called "The Weight" by The Band. Manny's unique blues-style guitar playing and Dan McCafferty's singing helped Nazareth become very popular.

In 1971, Nazareth toured with the famous band Deep Purple. By 1973, Nazareth was popular enough to be the main act at their own concerts. Manny also became the band's producer for many years. He took over from Roger Glover for their album Hair of the Dog.

Hair of the Dog was a huge success. It sold over two million copies in the United States, earning a platinum award. It is Nazareth's most famous album and includes their biggest hit song, "Love Hurts". This song reached number 8 in the United States. Manny also produced the first solo album for Dan McCafferty around this time.

Working with Guns N' Roses

Axl Rose, the singer for the band Guns N' Roses, wanted Manny Charlton to produce their first big album. Manny was known for producing Nazareth's Hair of the Dog. So, in June 1986, Manny went to Los Angeles to work with Guns N' Roses.

They recorded many songs together, including "Paradise City" and "Welcome to the Jungle". They had 25 songs ready. However, Manny had to go back to Europe for Nazareth's recording work. So, Guns N' Roses hired another producer, Mike Clink. Manny's early recordings with the band were later included as bonus tracks on a special re-release of their album Appetite for Destruction in 2018.

Leaving Nazareth and Solo Music

Manny Charlton left Nazareth in 1990. After that, he played some solo shows in Scotland. His first solo album, Drool, came out in 1997.

The next year, he moved to Texas in the United States. There, he started a new band called the Manny Charlton Band (MCB). They released two albums, Stonkin and Klone This, before the band stopped playing together in 2003.

Music for the Doom Game

In 1995, Manny Charlton sent a cassette tape to id Software. This company created the popular video game Doom. The tape had a song that John Romero, one of the game's creators, later named "Blood on the Walls".

Manny wrote on the tape, "For all the guys and gals at I.D. (sic) who came up with the coolest game this side of hell, kick some demon butt to this!!" He also said the song could be shared freely, which was common for PC games back then. This song was actually called "Doom" and was from Manny's album Drool. John Romero later shared it online as an mp3 file.

More Solo Work

In 2004, Manny Charlton released another solo album called Say The Word. In 2005, he released Sharp, which included many cover songs. These were his versions of songs by other artists, like "Hang On To A Dream" by Tim Hardin and "Shelter from the Storm" by Bob Dylan. Later that year, he released Sharp Re-Loaded.

In 2006, Manny joined a Swedish rock band called From Behind. They released an album called Game Over and toured around Europe. After that, Manny released another solo album, Americana Deluxe. On this album, he covered songs like "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac.

In 2013, Manny Charlton released Hellacious. This album was made in California and featured other famous musicians like Steven Adler. In 2014, his albums Sharp and Sharp Re-Loaded were re-released as a double CD. A music critic praised Manny's work, especially his version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower". In 2018, a "Best Of" album of Manny's solo career was released, called Créme De La Créme.
