The Manso River is a river that flows through two countries: Argentina and Chile. It's located in a beautiful area called Patagonia, within the Andes mountains. The Manso River winds its way through snowy peaks and connects many glacial lakes (lakes formed by glaciers). It generally flows south until it meets the Puelo River in Chile. While in Argentina, the river flows through Nahuel Huapi National Park. Much of the southern part of this park is drained by the Manso River.

Journey of the Manso River

The Manso River begins high up in the mountains, about 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. It starts from a small lake that is fed by the Ventisquero Negro glacier.

From its source, the river flows eastward for about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to Mascardi Lake. After Mascardi Lake, the Manso River travels through a series of other lakes. These lakes include Las Moscas, Hess, Roca, Franck, Martin, and Steffen. Short, sometimes fast-moving river sections connect these lakes.

A road runs along parts of the river's course, especially near Mascardi Lake and Lago Hess. However, some areas are wild and roadless until the river reaches the lower end of Lake Steffen. Lake Steffen is the last lake the Manso flows through in Argentina before it continues into Chile. About 35 kilometers (22 miles) after entering Chile, the Manso River joins the Puelo River.

Fun Activities on the Manso River

The Manso River is a great place for outdoor adventures!

Whitewater Rafting Adventures

Many people enjoy whitewater rafting on the Manso River. The most exciting sections for rafting are below Steffen Lake, all the way to the border with Chile. The river's character changes a lot, from very calm parts (the word "manso" actually means "peaceful" in Spanish) to thrilling Class IV rapids. This means there's something for everyone, whether you're looking for a relaxing float or an exciting ride!

Fishing for Trout

Sport fishing is also very popular here. You can try to catch different kinds of trout that have been introduced to the river and its lakes. These include brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout. Many tourist companies in the city of Bariloche offer special trips for both rafting and fishing.

Hiking the Huella Andina Trail

A part of the long-distance hiking trail called Huella Andina passes close to the Manso River and the lakes along its path. This offers a great way to explore the beautiful natural scenery around the river on foot.
