The Puelo River is a beautiful river in South America. It starts in Lake Puelo in Argentina. Then, it flows northwest through the Andes mountains. The river eventually reaches Chile. It ends in the Reloncaví Estuary, which is part of the Pacific Ocean. This estuary is at the northern end of the Gulf of Ancud.

Where Does the Puelo River Flow?

The Puelo River begins its journey in Puelo Lake. About 800 meters (2,600 feet) from its start, the river flows into Inferior Lake. After leaving Inferior Lake, the river generally moves towards the northwest.

Lakes and Tributaries Along the Way

As the Puelo River flows, it collects water from several other lakes. The biggest of these lakes are Azul and Las Rocas. It also gets water from other rivers. These include the Ventisquero River and the Traidor River. A part of Pumalín Park runs close to the Ventisquero River. The Traidor River starts in Hornopirén National Park.

The Manso River Joins In

A large river called the Manso River is a major branch of the Puelo. The Manso River also starts in Argentina. Its sources are Mascardi Lake and other streams near Cerro Tronador. The Manso River flows southwest through the Andes. It then joins the Puelo River a few kilometers west of the 72nd meridian.

Lakes Formed by the River

In its lower part, the Puelo River slows down in some places. This creates three smaller lakes. They are called Superior Lake, Inferior Lake, and Tagua Tagua Lake.
