Mantella |
The Mantellinae are a group of small frogs. They belong to a larger frog family called Mantellidae. These colorful frogs mostly live on the island of Madagascar. You can also find some of them on the nearby island of Mayotte.
Many Mantellinae frogs look a lot like poison dart frogs. They are also often toxic, meaning they have poisons in their skin. These frogs usually have very bright warning colors. These colors tell predators, "Stay away! I'm poisonous!" There are more than 100 different kinds, or species, of frogs in this group.
Discovering Mantellinae Frogs
Scientists have found many different types of Mantellinae frogs. This group is divided into two main genera (which is the plural of genus):
- Mantella: This group has about 16 known species. These are often the most brightly colored ones.
- Mantidactylus: This group is much larger, with over 80 species. They show a lot of variety in how they look and where they live.
