María de los Ángeles Moreno Uriegas (born January 15, 1945 – died April 27, 2019) was an important politician from Mexico. She made history by becoming the first woman to be chosen as the leader of a major Mexican political party.
Early Life and Education
María de los Ángeles Moreno Uriegas was born in Mexico City. Her parents were Manuel Moreno and Amalia Uriegas Sánchez.
She studied economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This is one of the biggest universities in Mexico. She also continued her studies in the Netherlands.
Political Journey
Moreno Uriegas became an active member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1960. This is a very important political party in Mexico.
She held several key positions in the Mexican government:
- From 1988 to 1991, she served as the Secretary of Fisheries. This meant she was in charge of things related to fishing in Mexico. She worked under President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
- In 1992, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. She even became the President of this group.
- In December 1994, she achieved a major milestone. Moreno was elected President of her political party, the PRI. This made her the first woman in Mexico to hold such a high position.
- From 1994 to 2000, she served in the Senate. She represented the Federal District. In 1997, she was the President of the Senate.
- Later, from 2000 to 2003, she worked as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District.
- In 2006, she returned to the Senate. She was chosen through a system called proportional representation.
María de los Ángeles Moreno passed away in Mexico City on April 27, 2019. She was 74 years old.
