Marc Bazin's Life and Career
Early Life and Education
Marc Bazin was born in Saint-Marc, Haiti. His father, Louis Bazin, was a respected member of the community. Marc Bazin studied law and economics in Brussels, Belgium. After his studies, he worked as an economist for the World Bank from 1972 to 1976.
Becoming a Minister
In 1982, Bazin became the Minister of Finance and Economy for six months. This was during the time when Jean-Claude Duvalier was in charge of Haiti.
Running for President
Marc Bazin was seen as a favorite candidate by some international groups and wealthy Haitians. When Haiti decided to hold free elections in 1990, Bazin was considered a strong contender. However, in the Haitian general election, 1990–1991, Jean-Bertrand Aristide won with 67% of the votes. Bazin received 14%.
After nine months, Aristide was removed from power by a military group. In June 1992, the army chose Bazin to be the acting president. The United States government first said this was against the law. But they soon started to work with Bazin and asked Aristide to talk with the military and Bazin. When Bill Clinton became president of the U.S., their policy changed. Marc Bazin resigned from his role on June 8, 1993.
Later Political Activities
Bazin remained a political opponent of Aristide. He ran for president again in the 2006 Haitian general election. However, he received only a small percentage of the votes, about 0.68%, in a race with many candidates.
Final Years
Marc Bazin passed away on June 16, 2010. He died from prostate cancer at his home in Pétion-Ville, which is in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
