Marc Lamont Hill (born December 17, 1978) is an American professor, author, activist, and TV host. He teaches urban education at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. He is known for hosting shows like UpFront on Al Jazeera English and reunion shows for Basketball Wives. He also works as a news correspondent for BET and co-hosts The Joe Budden Podcast.

Hill has also been a political commentator for CNN and Fox News. In 2018, he was fired from CNN after a speech he gave at the United Nations. The speech was about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. CNN did not give a public reason for firing him.

Early Life and Schooling

Marc Lamont Hill was born and grew up in Philadelphia. When he was 14, he went to a basketball summer camp where he met Kobe Bryant, who would later become an NBA superstar. They became close friends and stayed friends until Bryant's death in 2020.

After high school, Hill went to Morehouse College, a well-known HBCU (Historically Black College or University). He left after his first year because he said he was "hanging out and getting in trouble." He returned to Philadelphia and finished his first degree at Temple University in 2000. Later, he earned his master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Career in Education and Media

Teaching Career

Hill began his teaching career as a professor at Temple University from 2005 to 2009. He then taught at Teachers College, Columbia University until 2014. After that, he taught at Morehouse College and later returned to Temple University in 2017. In 2023, he joined the CUNY Graduate Center as a professor of urban education.

Television and Podcasts

Hill started as a political contributor for Fox News in 2007. He appeared on shows like The O'Reilly Factor and Hannity. Before Fox, he was a commentator on CNN and MSNBC.

In 2010, he began hosting a TV show called Our World with Black Enterprise. He later hosted a show for the Huffington Post. In 2021, he became the host of UpFront on Al Jazeera English. That same year, he also started hosting Black News Tonight on the Black News Channel. In 2024, Hill became a co-host on The Joe Budden Podcast.

Activism and Community Work

Marc Lamont Hill is very active in fighting for social justice. He helped start a non-profit organization called My5th, which teaches young people about their legal rights. He also started a project that uses hip-hop culture to help high school students improve their reading skills.

Hill works with the ACLU on drug law reform. For his work, Ebony magazine named him one of America's top 30 Black leaders under the age of 30.

He has also supported people he felt were treated unfairly by the justice system. In 2013, an article he wrote for Ebony.com about CeCe McDonald won a GLAAD Media Award.

In 2010, Hill filed a lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia and four police officers. He said that the officers, including a well-known officer named Richard DeCoatsworth, had unfairly stopped him while he was driving.

During the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Hill supported the Green Party. He felt that the main candidates, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, would not create the changes he believed were needed.
