Marc Van Montagu facts for kids
Marc, Baron Van Montagu was born on November 10, 1933, in Ghent, Belgium. He is a famous Belgian scientist who studies molecular biology. This field looks at how living things work at a tiny, molecular level.
Marc Van Montagu was a professor at Ghent University in Belgium. He led the Laboratory of Genetics there. He also directed the genetics department at the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB).
In 1982, he started a biotech company called Plant Genetic Systems Inc. with Jozef Schell. He was a scientific director and board member there. He also helped start another biotech company, CropDesign. Today, he leads the Public Research and Regulation Initiative (PRRI).

Discovering Plant Superpowers
Marc Van Montagu and his team made a huge discovery. They found something called the Ti plasmid. This is a small piece of DNA found in a type of bacteria called Agrobacterium.
They learned how this bacteria transfers its genes into plants. This discovery was a game-changer! It helped scientists learn how to change Agrobacterium. They could then use it to put new genes into plants. This is how they created transgenic plants. These are plants with new traits.
Making Stronger Plants
Their work helped create a new field called plant molecular genetics. They studied how plant cells grow and change. They also looked at how plants react to tough conditions. These conditions include too much light, ozone, cold, salt, and drought.
Thanks to their research, scientists could build new kinds of crops. For example, they made tobacco, rape seed, and corn plants. These new plants could fight off insect pests. They could also handle new herbicides, which are chemicals used to kill weeds.
Van Montagu also worked with poplar trees. He helped engineer these trees to have better qualities for making paper pulp.
Helping Global Agriculture
After retiring from Ghent University, Marc Van Montagu started a new project. He created IPBO, which stands for International Plant Biotechnology Outreach. This group works with VIB-Ghent University.
IPBO's main goal is to find biotech solutions for farming around the world. They want to help make agriculture better. In 2015, IPBO launched the “Marc and Nora Van Montagu (MNVM) Fund.” This fund focuses on sustainable agriculture. It also supports agro-industry in Africa.
Awards and Recognitions
Marc Van Montagu has received many honors for his important work. He became a foreign associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1986. He is also part of many other science academies around the world. These include academies in Russia, France, Sweden, Italy, and Brazil. He is also a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences.
He has received eight special degrees called Doctor Honoris Causa. In 1990, the King of Belgium, Baudouin of Belgium, gave him the title of Baron.
