Marko M. Feingold (born May 28, 1913 – died September 19, 2019) was an Austrian man who survived the Holocaust. He lived to be over 100 years old! He was also the leader of the Jewish community in Salzburg, Austria, and looked after their synagogue (a Jewish place of worship).

Marko Feingold's Life Story

Marko Feingold was born in a town called Besztercebánya. This town was part of Austria-Hungary back then. Today, it is known as Banská Bystrica in Slovakia. He grew up in Leopoldstadt, a part of Vienna.

Early Life and Travel

After finishing his business training, Marko found work in Vienna. Later, he lost his job. He then traveled to Italy with his brother, Ernst.

Arrest and Concentration Camps

In 1938, Marko was arrested in Vienna during a short visit. He managed to escape to Prague. However, he was sent to Poland and then returned to Prague using fake documents.

In 1939, he was arrested again. This time, he was sent to a concentration camp called Auschwitz. These camps were terrible places where many people suffered during the Holocaust.

Marko was also held in other concentration camps. These included Neuengamme and Dachau. Finally, in 1941, he was sent to Buchenwald. He stayed there until he was set free in 1945.

Life After Liberation

After being freed, Marko Feingold moved to Salzburg by chance and decided to stay there. Between 1945 and 1948, he helped many Jewish survivors. These survivors were living in special camps for displaced persons in Salzburg.

He also worked with a Jewish refugee group called Bricha. This group helped Jews from Central and Eastern Europe move to Palestine.

In 1948, Marko bought a fashion store. He later became an important voice for remembering the Holocaust.

Leadership in the Jewish Community

Marko Feingold was the president of the Jewish community in Salzburg for a short time between 1946 and 1947. After he retired from his job in 1977, he became the vice president. Then, in 1979, he became president of the Jewish community again.

After his retirement, he gave many talks. He shared his experiences from the concentration camps and spoke about the Holocaust. He also taught people about Judaism.

Marko Feingold passed away on September 19, 2019. He was 106 years old.
