Marcos Roberto Silveira dos Reis, known simply as Marcos, is a famous Brazilian former footballer. He was a fantastic goalkeeper. Many experts think he is one of the best Brazilian goalkeepers ever.

Marcos played his entire professional career for one team, Palmeiras. He played for them from 1992 until he retired in January 2012. He became a huge hero for the club's fans. They even nicknamed him São Marcos, which means "Saint Mark" in Portuguese. He was the main goalkeeper for the Brazilian team that won the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Marcos joined Palmeiras in 1992. He became the team's main goalkeeper in 1999. This happened after the first-choice goalkeeper, Velloso, got injured.

Marcos showed amazing skills in the 1999 Copa Libertadores tournament. He helped Palmeiras win the title. They beat their big rivals, Corinthians, in a penalty shootout during the quarter-finals. After this, fans started calling him São Marcos. In 2000, he faced Corinthians again in the Libertadores semi-finals. Once more, he helped his team win in a penalty shootout.

In 2002, after his great performance at the World Cup, Marcos received an offer. The English team Arsenal wanted him to join them. He even traveled to London to sign the contract. However, he decided not to join Arsenal. He said he would rather play in Brazil's second division with Palmeiras. He preferred staying with his team over playing in Europe just for money.

In 2008, Marcos helped Palmeiras win the 2008 Campeonato Paulista championship. On September 21, 2008, he played his 400th game for Palmeiras. This was a Campeonato Brasileiro Série A match against Vasco.

To celebrate his 400th game, Marcos received a special jersey. It had "400" printed on the back. It also said "O melhor goleiro do Brasil," meaning "The best goalkeeper in Brazil." The front of the shirt listed all the titles he had won with Palmeiras and the Brazilian national team.

Marcos announced his retirement from football on January 4, 2012. He was 38 years old at the time. He decided to retire because of his age and many injuries. Marcos is considered one of the biggest heroes for Palmeiras fans. He is often mentioned alongside other club legends like Ademir da Guia and Djalma Santos.

Playing for Brazil

Marcos first played for the Brazil national team on November 13, 1999. This match was against Spain. Before that, he was a backup goalkeeper for Brazil in the 1999 Copa América and the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup. Other goalkeepers like Dida and Rogério Ceni were often chosen before him.

He became Brazil's starting goalkeeper in the 2001 Copa América. He kept this position after the tournament. This meant Dida became the backup goalkeeper.

Marcos was chosen as the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He replaced Cláudio Taffarel. Marcos played every minute of every game in the tournament. He did not let the other team score in four matches. He only let in four goals in seven games. He helped Brazil win the World Cup for a record fifth time.

Even though he played amazingly, Marcos had a secret injury during the World Cup. He had a broken wrist that had not healed properly. He was in pain and sometimes struggled to catch the ball. He hid this injury from his coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, so he could keep playing.

After the World Cup, Marcos had more injuries. He lost his starting spot on the national team. He only played four more international games after 2002. He was not chosen for the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup or the 2004 Copa América.

In 2005, he was called back to the team for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. He played one game in this tournament. It was a 2–2 draw against Japan in the group stage. This was his last game for Brazil.

On October 6, 2005, Marcos announced he was retiring from international football. However, he continued to play for Palmeiras. He later changed his mind about retiring from the national team. He said he was still available to play if needed. He was on standby lists for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2007 Copa América. But he did not make the final team for either tournament.

How Marcos Played

Marcos was known for being tall, athletic, and a strong leader on the field. He was also very good at handling pressure. People praised him for playing well for many years. His nickname, São Marcos ("Saint Mark"), shows how much he was admired. He was also famous for being excellent at stopping penalty kicks. Many football experts believe he is one of Brazil's greatest goalkeepers ever.
