Marcus Peter Stoinis (born August 16, 1989) is an Australian cricket player. He plays for the Australia national cricket team in Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. Marcus is known as an all-rounder, meaning he is good at both batting and bowling. He bats right-handed and bowls right-arm medium-pace.

In Australia, Stoinis has captained the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. He has also played Sheffield Shield cricket for Western Australia and Victoria. Marcus was a key player in the Australian teams that won the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He has also played in many Twenty20 leagues around the world.

Early Life and Junior Cricket

Marcus Stoinis was born in Perth, Australia. His family has Greek heritage. He started playing cricket at a young age, representing Western Australia in under-17 and under-19 teams.

Playing for Australia's Youth Teams

Stoinis played for the Australian under-19 team in the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. This was a big step in his early career. The next year, he also played for Australia in the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes, a fast-paced version of cricket.

Domestic and T20 Cricket Career

Marcus Stoinis began his senior cricket career playing for Western Australia. He made his one-day debut in the 2008–09 Ford Ranger One Day Cup season. Soon after, he also played his first Sheffield Shield match. Both of these important games were against Queensland.

Playing for Different Teams

Stoinis played club cricket for Scarborough in Western Australia and for Northcote in Victoria. He also spent some time playing in England for the Peterborough Town Cricket Club in 2012. During his time there, he even took a hat-trick in one match!

In December 2012, Stoinis joined the Perth Scorchers for the 2012–13 Big Bash League season. He later moved to play for Victoria in 2013. He returned to Western Australia for the 2017–18 season.

Success in T20 Leagues

Stoinis has played for many teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He joined the Delhi Daredevils in 2015 and then the Kings XI Punjab in 2016. On May 13, 2016, he had his best bowling performance in T20 cricket, taking 4 wickets for only 15 runs.

In 2018, Stoinis started opening the batting for the Melbourne Stars. This was a great move for him. He became the top run-scorer for the Stars in the 2018–19 Big Bash League season, scoring 533 runs. He also took 14 wickets that season.

He later played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. In 2020, he scored his highest individual score in the Big Bash League, making 147 runs from 79 balls against the Sydney Sixers.

In January 2020, Stoinis was fined for using inappropriate language during a match. He apologized for his actions, saying he got "caught in the moment."

Stoinis continued to play in various T20 leagues. In 2022, he was bought by the Southern Brave for The Hundred in England. In 2023, he joined the San Francisco Unicorns for the first season of Major League Cricket in the United States. In December 2024, he was named captain of the Melbourne Stars for the 2024–25 Big Bash League season.

International Cricket Career

Marcus Stoinis made his international debut for Australia in 2015. He played his first Twenty20 International match against England on August 31, 2015. His first One Day International (ODI) match was also against England, on September 11, 2015.

Memorable Performances

On January 30, 2017, in only his second ODI, Stoinis had an amazing game against New Zealand. He took three wickets and scored an incredible 146 runs without being out. This was the highest ODI score by an Australian batsman batting at number seven. Even though his team lost, Stoinis was named man of the match for his outstanding effort.

World Cup Success

Stoinis was awarded a national contract by Cricket Australia in April 2018. He was also part of Australia's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In August 2021, Stoinis was selected for Australia's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Australia went on to win this tournament, with Stoinis being a key part of the team. He was also in the Australian squad that won the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. He played 6 matches in that tournament.

In May 2024, Stoinis was named in Australia’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He played a very important role in this tournament, scoring 169 runs and taking 10 wickets.

In February 2025, Marcus Stoinis announced that he had retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket.
