Margaret Ruth Bhatty (born Margaret Ruth Grundy, October 5, 1930 – July 20, 2012) was an Indian writer. She was also a schoolteacher and a journalist. She is well-known for writing children's books and short stories for adults.

Margaret Bhatty's Life

Her Early Years

Margaret Ruth Bhatty was born on October 5, 1930. Her birthplace was Berinag, which is now in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. She grew up there, enjoying nature. She loved fishing, hunting, and trekking in the Kumaon region. This time helped her develop a deep love for nature.

Margaret went to Wellesley Girls School in Nainital. Later, she studied at Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow. She also earned a postgraduate degree in Journalism from Nagpur.

Family Life

On December 17, 1954, Margaret married Feroze Bhatty. They had two children together. Their son, Arvind, was born on December 25, 1955. Their daughter, Pritam, was born on September 13, 1960.

Margaret Bhatty passed away on July 20, 2012, in Pune, India.

Her Career as a Writer and Teacher

After college, Margaret Bhatty worked as a teacher. She taught at Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow. She also worked as a journalist in Nagpur. She wrote articles for The Hitavada newspaper.

Later, she taught at other schools. These included Kimmins High School in Panchgani in 1963. She also taught at All Saints Girls School in Nainital.

Margaret Bhatty wrote regularly for Target, a popular children's magazine. Her work also appeared in English newspapers in India. She was published in magazines for humanist groups around the world. These included groups in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.

Awards and Recognition

Margaret Bhatty won first prize in a big contest in 1982. It was the BBC World Service International Story Contest. Her story, "All is Maya, All is Illusion," was chosen from 800 entries. This story was later published in a BBC collection.

In 1995, she won another BBC World Service contest. This time, it was for drama. Her radio play was called My Enemy, My Friend. It was about different groups of people getting along.
