Marián Vajda is a famous Slovak professional tennis coach and former player. He was born on March 24, 1965. Vajda is most well-known for being the main coach of Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic. He coached Djokovic for almost his entire professional career.
Under Vajda's guidance, Djokovic won an amazing 85 men's singles titles. This includes 20 Grand Slam trophies. This makes Vajda one of the most successful coaches in tennis history!
Marián Vajda's Tennis Journey
Early Playing Career
Marián Vajda was born in Považská Bystrica, which is in Slovakia. He was a member of the Olympic team for Czechoslovakia. In 1992, he played in the Olympic Games in Barcelona. He reached the third round of the French Open in 1991.
Vajda also won two singles titles during his playing career. His highest ranking as a singles player was World No. 34 in September 1987. After his playing days, Vajda became the captain of both the Slovakia Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams.
Coaching Success
Vajda started coaching Karol Kučera from 2001 to 2005. Then, in 2006, he began coaching Novak Djokovic. He coached Djokovic until 2017, and then again from 2018 to 2022. For a few years, from 2013 to 2016, Boris Becker also joined Djokovic's team as head coach, but Vajda remained an important part of the team.
For his amazing work with Novak Djokovic, Vajda received special awards. The Olympic Committee of Serbia named him the best coach in both 2010 and 2011. In 2018, he also won the prestigious ATP Coach of the Year award.
After coaching Djokovic, Vajda started coaching another Slovak player, Alex Molčan, in May 2022.
