Early Life of Maria Vittoria
Maria Vittoria was the only child of Carlo Emanuele dal Pozzo della Cisterna, who was the 5th Prince of Cisterna d'Asti and of Belriguardo. Her mother was Countess Louise de Mérode-Westerloo. When her father died in 1864, Maria Vittoria inherited his important noble titles. This made her the Princess of Cisterna d'Asti and of Belriguardo, along with other titles like Marquise of Voghera.
Her Marriage and Time as Queen
On May 30, 1867, Maria Vittoria married Prince Amadeo of Savoy in Turin, Italy. He was known as the Duke of Aosta and was the son of the King of Italy. There is an old story that says many unlucky things happened at their wedding.
On November 16, 1870, her husband was chosen to become the King of Spain. This meant Maria Vittoria became the Queen of Spain. While in Spain, she lived a quiet life and spent her time helping others through charity work. King Amadeo decided to step down from his role on February 11, 1873. After this, he and Maria Vittoria went back to Italy. Her health became very poor, and she sadly passed away later that year from tuberculosis in Sanremo.
Her Children
Maria Vittoria and Prince Amadeo had three sons:
- Prince Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy-Aosta, Duke of Aosta (born January 13, 1869 – died July 4, 1931). He became a very high-ranking military leader in Italy. He married Princess Hélène of Orléans and they had children.
- Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy-Aosta, Count of Turin (born November 24, 1870 – died October 10, 1946). He never married.
- Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy-Aosta, Duke of the Abruzzi (born January 29, 1873 – died March 18, 1933). He was a Vice Admiral in the Italian Royal Navy. He also never married.
