Early Life of Prince Vittorio Emanuele
Vittorio Emanuele was born in Turin, Italy. This was just before his father, Prince Amadeo of Savoy, became King of Spain. His mother was Maria Vittoria del Pozzo della Cisterna. When his father became king, Vittorio Emanuele also received the title of Infante of Spain.
The Famous Duel
In 1897, Vittorio Emanuele challenged Prince Henri of Orléans to a duel. This happened because Henri had written articles in a newspaper called Le Figaro. In these articles, he called Italian soldiers captured in Ethiopia "cowards." This was during the First Italo–Ethiopian War. The argument became very well-known across Italy and Europe.
They agreed to use swords for the duel. The Italians believed sword duels were more honorable for princes than pistol duels. The duel took place on August 15, 1897, in France. It lasted 26 minutes. Vittorio Emanuele won the duel, seriously injuring Henri. This victory made Vittorio Emanuele famous throughout Europe.
In Italy, people celebrated Vittorio Emanuele's return. King Umberto I welcomed him, praising him for his actions and success.
Later Years and Military Career
In April 1898, Vittorio Emanuele began a trip around the world. His first stop was New York City in the United States of America. He visited the Newport Country Club and gave them a silver cup. This cup is now given to the winner of their yearly golf tournament. After the United States, he traveled to China and Japan.
Vittorio Emanuele also had a career in the Royal Italian Army. He became the Commander in Chief of the Italian Cavalry. He held this important role during the First World War. After the war ended, France honored him with the Croix de guerre award.
Vittorio Emanuele passed away in Brussels, Belgium, on October 10, 1946. This was a few months after Italy became a republic. He was the last living son of King Amadeo I.
