Mariana Bridi's Illness
Mariana got sick in December 2008. At first, doctors thought she had kidney stones. In early January, she was diagnosed with a serious urinary tract infection. This infection got much worse and led to a condition called septic shock. Septic shock is a very dangerous reaction by the body to an infection.
The infection was caused by a strong germ called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This germ is hard to treat with medicines because it can resist many antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not a common cause for a urinary tract infection, but it seemed to be what caused her serious condition.
Later in January, Mariana's condition became even more serious. The infection damaged her feet and hands. Doctors had to remove them to try and save her life. Part of her stomach was also removed during her last surgery.
