Mariana Bridi Costa (born June 18, 1988 – died January 24, 2009) was a Brazilian model. She was also known as Mari.

Mariana Bridi's Modeling Career

Mariana started modeling when she was 14 years old. She took part in many contests and fashion shows. In 2006, she came in fourth place in the Miss World Brazil beauty pageant. A beauty pageant is a competition where people are judged on their looks and talents.

In 2007, she entered the Miss Bikini International contest. That same year, she competed in the Face Of The Universe contest held in South Africa. She won the title for having the fourth most beautiful face in the world. She was also a finalist in the Brazilian part of the Miss World 2008 beauty pageant, where she again placed fourth.

Mariana Bridi's Illness

Mariana got sick in December 2008. At first, doctors thought she had kidney stones. In early January, she was diagnosed with a serious urinary tract infection. This infection got much worse and led to a condition called septic shock. Septic shock is a very dangerous reaction by the body to an infection.

The infection was caused by a strong germ called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This germ is hard to treat with medicines because it can resist many antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not a common cause for a urinary tract infection, but it seemed to be what caused her serious condition.

Later in January, Mariana's condition became even more serious. The infection damaged her feet and hands. Doctors had to remove them to try and save her life. Part of her stomach was also removed during her last surgery.

Mariana Bridi's Death

Mariana passed away on the morning of January 24, 2009. She was in a hospital in Espírito Santo, Brazil. She died from serious problems caused by the infection.

According to the hospital, the cause of death was a very serious infection, a urinary infection, and bleeding in her stomach. This caused her body's organs to stop working properly, a condition called multiple organ failure.

Mariana's story became known around the world. Her friends said they received many messages of support from people everywhere. Over 1,000 people attended her funeral.
