Maricao is a special kind of neighborhood called a barrio in the town of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 5,192 people lived there.
A Look at Maricao's Past
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War in 1898. It was given to the U.S. by Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 741 people lived in the Maricao barrio at that time.
