Marie Majerová (born February 1, 1882 – died January 16, 1967) was an important Czech writer and translator. She is known for her stories and novels that often talked about the lives of working people and women. She also wrote many books for children.
Life and Early Years
Marie Majerová was born in a town called Úvaly. Her parents were working-class, meaning they earned their living through labor. She grew up in Kladno, another town in what was then the Kingdom of Bohemia.
When Marie was sixteen, she started working as a servant in Budapest. This experience likely showed her the challenges faced by working people. Later, she continued her education in big cities like Prague, Paris, and Vienna.
Writing and Activism
Marie Majerová began publishing her works in the early 1900s. In 1907, she released a collection of stories called Povídky z pekla a jiné (Stories from Hell and other stories). She also published a novel titled Panenství (Maidenhood) that same year.
Her writing often focused on important social issues. She wrote about the difficulties faced by the working class and the challenges women experienced in society. She wanted to show how people could be treated unfairly. Marie Majerová also wrote many popular books especially for children.
Besides her writing, Marie Majerová was also very active in social movements. She was a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party from when it first started. This party believed in a society where everyone was equal and shared resources. She was also involved in the feminist movement, which worked for equal rights and opportunities for women.
Personal Life and Legacy
Marie Majerová was married two times. Her first husband was a journalist named Josef Stivín. Later, she married a graphic artist named Slavoboj Tusar.
She passed away in Prague when she was 84 years old. Her stories and ideas continue to be important in Czech literature.
Some of Marie Majerová's novels were even turned into movies. Her book Panenství became a film called Virginity in 1937. Another novel, Siréna, was made into a movie called The Strike in 1947. This film was very successful and won a special award called the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
