Marie de Bourbon (born October 15, 1605 – died June 4, 1627) was a French noblewoman. She was known as the Duchess of Montpensier in her own right. She also became the Duchess of Orléans when she married. Marie was one of the last members of the important House of Bourbon-Montpensier family. Her parents were Henri de Bourbon, the Duke of Montpensier, and Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse.

Marie's Early Life

Marie de Bourbon was born at the château de Gaillon. This castle is in Gaillon, which is in the Normandy region of France.

Childhood and First Engagements

Before she got married, people called her Mademoiselle de Montpensier. She was the only child of the Duke and Duchess of Montpensier. When she was just two years old, she was promised in marriage. Her first fiancé was Nicolas Henri de France. He was the second son of Henry IV of France. Sadly, he died when he was only four years old in 1611.

After Nicolas Henri's death, Marie was promised to his brother, Gaston, Duke of Orléans. Gaston was the younger brother of King Louis XIII. He was also the heir presumptive to the French throne. This meant he was next in line to be king if Louis XIII had no children.

Becoming a Duchess

Marie's father passed away in 1608. At that time, Marie became the Duchess of Montpensier. This was a very old and important title in France. The Duchy of Montpensier had been a county since 1539. Marie was also a descendant of famous French kings. These included John II of France from the House of Valois and Saint Louis.

Marriage and Family

Marie was very wealthy because she was the only heir to the Montpensier family's fortune. Even though Gaston did not want to marry her, King Louis XIII and Richelieu insisted. They wanted the marriage to happen because of Marie's great wealth.

The Wedding

The wedding took place in Nantes on August 6, 1626. Many important people were there. This included King Louis XIII, his wife Queen Anne of Austria, and the Queen Mother, Marie de' Medici. Someone who worked for Gaston said it was "A sadder wedding was never seen." This shows that it was not a happy day for the couple.

Birth of Her Daughter

Marie and Gaston had one child together. Their daughter was named Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans. She was born on May 29, 1627, at the Palais du Louvre in Paris. Anne Marie Louise later became very famous. People called her the Grande Mademoiselle.

Marie's Death

Marie died on June 4, 1627, at the Palais du Louvre in Paris. She was only twenty-one years old. She passed away shortly after her daughter was born. Because Anne Marie Louise was her only child, she inherited all of Marie's titles and fortune. Marie was buried at the Royal Basilica of Saint Denis, which is north of Paris. This is where many French royals are buried.

Later Inheritance

After her daughter, La Grande Mademoiselle, died in 1693, Marie's large fortune went to Philippe de France. Philippe was the younger and only brother of King Louis XIV.]
