Marielle Goitschel is a famous French former alpine skier. She was born on September 28, 1945. Marielle is the younger sister of Christine Goitschel, who was also a champion skier. Their family has a history in skiing, as Marielle is also the aunt of speed skier Philippe Goitschel.

A Skiing Superstar: Marielle Goitschel's Career

Marielle Goitschel became known as one of the world's best female skiers. She achieved great success early in her career. This included the 1962 World Championships and the 1964 Winter Olympics. She won an amazing 5 medals, including 3 gold medals, in these events.

Dominating the World Championships

Marielle continued to show her skill at the 1966 World Championships. These championships took place in Portillo, Chile. She won medals in all four events she competed in. This included 3 gold medals and one silver medal. Her performance proved she was a top athlete in alpine skiing.

World Cup Challenges and Triumphs

The alpine skiing World Cup started in January 1967. Many expected Marielle to win the overall title that first season. However, she just barely lost the main title to Nancy Greene from Canada. Even so, Marielle did win the special cup for downhill skiing. She also tied for the win in slalom with her teammate Annie Famose.

In the next season, Marielle finished 4th overall. She still managed to win the slalom championship again. Her final gold medal came in slalom at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. After that season, she decided to retire from ski racing. Marielle Goitschel won a total of 11 World Championships medals in alpine skiing. This is the second-highest number ever for women.

Sister Act: Olympic History Makers

Marielle and her sister Christine Goitschel made history together. They were the first sisters to stand on the same Olympic podium in an individual event. This happened at the 1964 Olympic Women's slalom. Christine won the gold medal, and Marielle won the silver.

Just two days later, they did it again! In the 1964 Olympic Women's giant slalom, they switched places. This time, Marielle won the gold medal, and Christine took the silver. It was an amazing achievement for both sisters.
