Marielle Goitschel (born 28 September 1945) is a famous French former alpine skier. She was known for her incredible skill on the slopes. Marielle is the younger sister of Christine Goitschel, who was also a champion skier. Their family even includes another skier, Philippe Goitschel, who is Marielle's nephew.

Marielle Goitschel: Skiing Champion

Marielle Goitschel became a top skier very early in her career. She achieved great success at the 1962 World Championships. She also shone brightly at the 1964 Winter Olympics. During these two major events, she won an amazing 5 medals, including 3 gold medals. People quickly recognized her as the best female skier in the world.

Continued Dominance in Skiing

Marielle kept up her winning streak at the 1966 World Championships. These championships were held in Portillo, Chile. There, she won medals in all four skiing events. She earned 3 gold medals and one silver medal. This showed just how dominant she was in the sport.

World Cup Challenges and Victories

In January 1967, the alpine skiing World Cup began. Many expected Marielle to win the overall title easily. However, she faced tough competition. She narrowly lost the main title to Nancy Greene from Canada. Still, Marielle proved her strength. She won the World Cup title in downhill skiing. She also tied for the win in slalom with her French teammate Annie Famose.

During the next season, Marielle again aimed for the overall title. She finished in 4th place overall. But she did win the slalom championship for the second time. Her final gold medal came in slalom at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. After that season, Marielle decided to retire from ski racing.

Marielle Goitschel holds an impressive record. She won a total of 11 World Championships medals in alpine skiing. This places her second all-time among women. Only Christl Cranz of Germany has won more, with 15 medals.

A Family of Olympic Medalists

Marielle and her sister Christine made history together. They were the first sisters to stand on the same Olympic podium in an individual event. This happened at the 1964 Olympic Women's slalom. Christine won the gold medal, and Marielle took the silver.

Just two days later, they did it again! In the 1964 Olympic Women's giant slalom, they switched places. Marielle won the gold medal, and Christine earned the silver. This was a truly special moment for the Goitschel sisters and for Olympic history.
