Marineland is a small town in Florida, United States. It was officially started in 1940. This unique town is located in both Flagler and St. Johns counties.

Marineland is about 18 miles south of St. Augustine, right along Route A1A. In 2020, only 15 people lived there, making it a very small community!

Many people know Marineland because of the famous Marineland marine park. However, it's important to remember that Marineland is also a real town with its own local government. The town shares a ZIP Code with St. Augustine Beach.

History of Marineland

The town of Marineland began when the Marineland Dolphin Adventure opened on June 23, 1938. It was first called "Marine Studios". This facility was built for Hollywood filmmakers to shoot underwater scenes for movies and news reports.

It quickly became known as the "World's First Oceanarium". Marine Studios was the first place where the public could get a close look at marine life. The town officially became a municipality (a self-governing area) in 1940.

Today, local businesses and organizations in Marineland work closely together. The town is a center for marine research and conservation. It is located within the GTM-NERR (Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve).

Some of the important partners include Mobius Marine, Inc., Ripple Effect Eco Tours, Marineland Marina, Marineland Dolphin Adventure, and the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience (part of the University of Florida). Other partners are the Florida Master Naturalist Program, the southern facility for the GTM NERR, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, and Faver-Dykes State Park.
