Mark Ian Addy is an English actor famous for his many roles in movies and television. You might know him as King Robert Baratheon in the first season of Game of Thrones or as Dave Horsefall in the movie The Full Monty.

He has also played Bill Miller in the American TV show Still Standing and DC Gary Boyle in the British comedy The Thin Blue Line. For his role in The Full Monty, Addy was nominated for a BAFTA Award, which is a major British acting award. Some of his other well-known movie roles include Fred Flintstone in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, Roland in A Knight's Tale, and Friar Tuck in Robin Hood.

Early Life and Education

Mark Addy was born in York, England. His family has a long history in the city. His father, Ian, worked as a glazier (a person who works with glass) at the famous York Minster cathedral.

Addy went to the Joseph Rowntree School in York. As a student, he got to work at the York Theatre Royal for three weeks. He enjoyed it so much that he kept working there and decided he wanted to become an actor. To follow his dream, he moved to London and studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1984.

Television Roles

Addy's first TV appearance was in 1987. He later appeared in popular shows like Heartbeat and Peak Practice. From 2002 to 2006, he starred in the American comedy Still Standing as the dad, Bill Miller.

In 2011, he became known to fans all over the world as King Robert Baratheon in the HBO series Game of Thrones. The show's creators said he was the perfect actor for the part and the easiest to cast. His character was a powerful king known for his wild lifestyle, but he was killed off in the first season after a hunting accident.

From 2013 to 2015, he played the hero Hercules in the BBC fantasy show Atlantis. He has also appeared in episodes of Doctor Who and the detective drama Vera.

Movie Roles

In 1997, Addy starred in the hit film The Full Monty. This role earned him a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2023, he returned to the role of Dave in a TV series that continued the story.

He played the cartoon character Fred Flintstone in the live-action movie The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas in 2000. A year later, he appeared as Roland, a loyal friend to a knight, in A Knight's Tale. He also played Friar Tuck in the 2010 movie Robin Hood alongside Russell Crowe.

More recently, he appeared as Mr. Bakewell in the Downton Abbey movie in 2019 and as Richard Buckley in The Lost King in 2022.

Besides screen acting, Addy has also performed in many plays. In 2007, he acted in a William Shakespeare play, Much Ado About Nothing, at the Royal National Theatre in London.
