Mark Oliver Everett, also known as E, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born on April 10, 1963. He is best known as the leader of the rock band Eels. Mark Oliver Everett writes songs about many different feelings and experiences. These often include themes like loneliness, growing up, and love. Early Life and Family
Mark Oliver Everett is the son of Hugh Everett III. His father was a famous physicist who developed the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. This is a complex idea about how the universe might work. Mark's grandfather, Harold Gore, was a well-known coach at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
When Mark was a teenager, he went to a concert by the band The Who. A special effects laser accidentally hit his eye. Because of this, he has worn glasses ever since.
Mark's father passed away when Mark was 19 years old. Mark was the one who found him. Later, Mark made a documentary film about his father's scientific ideas. Starting as E
In 1987, Mark Oliver Everett moved from Virginia to California. There, he began his music career. He released two albums under the name "E." These albums were A Man Called E (1992) and Broken Toy Shop (1993). He used the name "E" because many people around him had the same first name as him.
Forming the Band Eels
In 1995, Everett started the band Eels in Los Angeles. The band has released many studio albums over the years. Some of their albums include Beautiful Freak (1996), Electro-Shock Blues (1998), and Daisies of the Galaxy (2000). More recent albums include The Deconstruction (2018), Earth to Dora (2020), and Extreme Witchcraft (2022). Their latest album, Eels Time!, was released in 2024. Three of their albums, Hombre Lobo, End Times, and Tomorrow Morning, form a series. They explore themes like desire, sadness, and finding hope.

Mark Oliver Everett's music has been used in many popular films. For example, his songs have appeared in American Beauty and Scream 2. You might also hear his music in movies like Road Trip and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Mark Oliver Everett has faced some difficult times in his life. His sister passed away in 1996. In 1998, his mother was diagnosed with a serious illness. The lyrics on Eels' second album, Electro-Shock Blues, talk about these sad personal experiences.
Mark has been married twice. He married Natalia Kovaleva, a dentist, in 2000, but they later divorced. He then married a Scottish woman who works in the film industry. In 2017, at age 54, Mark became a father for the first time. His wife gave birth to their son, Archie McGregor Everett. However, the couple later divorced.
Mark's cousin, Jennifer Lewis, was a flight attendant. She was on American Airlines Flight 77 during the September 11 attacks in 2001. This plane hit the Pentagon. Mark mentions in his book that his father used to work in the part of the Pentagon that was hit.
In July 2014, Mark Oliver Everett received a special honor. He was given the Freedom of the City of London in England. This happened before one of his concerts.
Mark was raised as a Roman Catholic. However, he has said that he is now an agnostic. This means he believes it's not possible to know for sure if God exists.
