Mark Oliver Everett, also known as E, is an American singer and songwriter. He was born on April 10, 1963. He is the main singer and leader of the rock band Eels. Mark Oliver Everett is known for writing songs about feelings and life experiences.

Early Life and Family

Mark Oliver Everett's father was a scientist named Hugh Everett III. His father created an interesting idea in science called the many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory. This idea suggests there might be many parallel universes.

Mark's grandfather on his mother's side was Harold Gore. He was a coach for basketball, football, and baseball at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

When Mark was a teenager, something unusual happened at a concert. A special laser light hit his eye. Because of this, he has worn glasses ever since.

Mark's father passed away when Mark was 19 years old. Years later, Mark made a documentary film about his father's scientific ideas. The film was also about his relationship with his father. It was called Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives. The BBC showed it, and later it was on the PBS show NOVA in 2008.

Music Career

Starting as E

In 1987, Mark Oliver Everett moved from Virginia to California. There, he started his music career. He released two albums under the name "E". These albums were A Man Called E (1992) and Broken Toy Shop (1993). He used the name "E" because many people around him had the same first name as him.

In 1995, Everett started the band Eels in Los Angeles. They have released many studio albums. Some of their popular albums include Beautiful Freak (1996), Electro-Shock Blues (1998), and Blinking Lights and Other Revelations (2005). More recent albums include Earth to Dora (2020) and Extreme Witchcraft (2022). Their latest album is Eels Time! (2024).

Music in Movies

Mark Oliver Everett's music has been used in many movies. You might have heard his songs in films like American Beauty ("Cancer for the Cure"). His music was also in Scream 2 ("Your Lucky Day in Hell").

Songs by Eels have been featured in the Shrek movies. For example, "My Beloved Monster" was in Shrek. "I Need Some Sleep" was in Shrek 2. "Royal Pain" and "Losing Streak" were in Shrek the Third. "The Stars Shine in the Sky Tonight" was in Shrek the Halls.

His music was also a big part of the movie Yes Man. The song "Fresh Blood" is played during the credits of the TV show The Jinx.

Other Projects

Mark Oliver Everett is thought to be the musician behind the name MC Honky. MC Honky released an album called I Am the Messiah in 2003. Mark has never said if it's him, keeping it a mystery!

In 2007, Mark published his autobiography. It is a book about his life story. The book is called Things the Grandchildren Should Know.

Mark has also made small appearances in TV shows and movies. He was in the TV series Love by Judd Apatow. He also had a brief role in Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020). You can even spot him with his dog in the opening of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Personal Life

In 2000, Mark Oliver Everett married Natalia Kovaleva. She was a dentist from Russia. Their marriage lasted for five years. Later, he married a Scottish woman who worked in movies. When he was 54, Mark became a father for the first time. His wife gave birth to their son, Archie McGregor Everett. They later divorced.

Mark's cousin, Jennifer Lewis, was a flight attendant. She was on American Airlines Flight 77 during the September 11 attacks in 2001. That plane hit the Pentagon. Mark wrote in his book that he wondered if the plane hit the part of the Pentagon where his father used to work.

In July 2014, Mark Oliver Everett received a special honor. He was given the Freedom of the City of London. This happened before his concert at the Barbican Centre.

Mark has said that he is an agnostic. This means he believes it's not possible to know if God exists.
